How to set up your first kitchen (because you can’t always do takeout)

You’re in your first place. Congratulations! Now what do you do? Takeout and delivery gets old (and expensive), so you’ll want to make a few things. Maybe even some family favorites so you can make some of your old comfort food. Here’s a list to get you started:

  • Measuring equipment
    • 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup
    • 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup
    • Measuring spoons
  • Stovetop/oven equipment
    • 1-quart sauce pan
    • 3-quart sauce pan
    • 10-inch stainless steel frying pan
    • 8-inch nonstick frying pan
    • 10-inch cast iron or carbon steel frying pan
    • Half-sheet baking sheet
  • Cooking tools
    • Knives
      • 8 to 10-inch chef’s knife
      • paring knife
      • serrated knife
    • Small cutting board (about 5×7-inch) (plastic or poly, NOT bamboo or glass)
    • Medium cutting board (about 8.5 x 11-inch) (plastic or poly, NOT bamboo or glass)
  • Serving pieces
    • Flatware for 2 (in case you have a guest or a date)
    • Glassware:
      • small tumbler for juice and/or water
      • larger tumbler for iced drinks, smoothies, or beer
      • wine glasses (stemless, so you don’t risk breaking them)
    • Dishes (for 2):
      • saucer
      • dinner plate
      • salad/soup bowl
    • Mug (for coffee, soup, ramen, oatmeal, etc)

If you’re living really lean or maybe you’re a college student and just want to have enough to be able to make something for those times when you’re tired of a dining hall, start with this:

  • 2-cup measuring cup
  • 1-quart sauce pan
  • 8-inch nonstick frying pan
  • 1.5-quart mixing bowl
  • Chef’s knife
  • Small or medium cutting board
  • Spoon-style or flexible spatula
  • 1 small tumbler
  • Flatware for 1
  • 1 large glass
  • Mug
